Asya Fateyeva, saxophone

Asya Fateyeva is one of the outstanding representatives of classical saxophone and, with her artistic vision and versatility, places the instrument at the center of the music scene. Born in Crimea, she inspires audiences with innovative programs that combine a wide variety of styles and eras—from Baroque and Classical to Romantic, contemporary compositions, jazz, and world music.

Her playing is characterized by technical brilliance, emotional depth, and an unmistakable sound. Asya Fateyeva attracted international attention early on: in 2014, she made history by becoming the first woman to reach the final of the prestigious International Adolphe Sax Competition in Belgium, where she took third place. Since then, she has been regarded as a pioneer who has firmly established the saxophone in the classical music scene.

Her concert activities have taken her to renowned stages and festivals worldwide. She has performed with orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Ensemble Resonanz, the Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, and the MDR Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of renowned conductors such as Robin Ticciati, Bar Avni, Nil Venditti, Vladimir Spivakov, Joseph Bastian, Dirk Kaftan, and Michael Sanderling, she has performed at venues including the Vienna Musikverein, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, and the Lucerne Festival.

Highlights of the 2025/2026 season include her return to the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and debuts with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna at the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, and the Staatsorchester Darmstadt. She is also continuing her successful collaboration with the Lautten Compagney Berlin; with whom she has already released her second CD, Dancing Queen, featuring works by ABBA and Rameau, which won the Opus Klassik award in 2025. Her new CD, Nutcracker Unwrapped, an adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker by Wolf Kerschek, will be released in fall 2025.

Her path also leads her back to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, where she was artist-in-residence in the summer of 2024.

In addition to her work as a soloist, Asya Fateyeva is passionate about chamber music. She develops original projects, such as arrangements of Bach's Goldberg Variations for violoncello, accordion, and saxophone, programs featuring music from the 1920s, and cross-genre experiments with jazz and world music. Her creative versatility and openness make her a multicultural artist who combines different influences in her music.

She began her musical training as a junior student at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Professor Daniel Gauthier. She received decisive inspiration during study visits to France with Claude Delangle (Paris) and Jean-Denis Michat (Lyon). She also completed a postgraduate course in chamber music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater.

Today, she passes on her knowledge as a professor of classical saxophone at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater and at the Lübeck University of Music.
