Caroline Oltmanns, Piano

Profile

Caroline Oltmanns is a pianist who defies easy categorisation. In her playing, two worlds meet: a deep rootedness in the German piano tradition - shaped by the lineage of Walter Gieseking and Karl Leimer - and an artistic curiosity that continuously drives her towards new horizons. Seven solo albums, numerous world premieres of contemporary works, and concerts on three continents speak of a musician who never stands still.

What makes her playing so distinctive is the union of intellectual depth and immediate sensuality. Whether in the great Romantic repertoire of Brahms, Schumann, or Chopin, in Debussy, or in contemporary music - Oltmanns always uncovers new layers, guiding her audiences to places that feel familiar yet newly discovered. Her concert programmes, very often moderated by herself, are as carefully crafted as essays, as compelling as narratives.

As a Fulbright Scholar and International Steinway Artist, she has performed at leading venues around the world — from Weill Recital Hall in New York to the Redlands Bowl in Los Angeles, from South Africa to China. Her most recent album WIND (2022) was acclaimed by the international press as artistically innovative and intellectually bold.

That she is also a Professor at Youngstown State University and presents masterclasses worldwide comes as no surprise: Oltmanns thinks deeply about music, speaks about it with eloquence — and that depth of reflection can be heard in every note she plays.
