Ilya Shmukler

Competition 2024

First Prize, Mozart Prize, Audience Prize, Junior Jury Prize, Hungarian Radio Art Groups Special Prize

"Shmukler is a volcano" and "Ilya Shmukler's name is something to remember now," wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung after his triumph at the 2024 Géza Anda Competition in Zurich, where he received four other major awards in addition to First Prize. When he was three years old, Ilya's mother discovered him jumping around on the bed and singing Robertino Loreti's "Jamaica." However, it was important to his parents to raise their son to be a well-rounded person, and so he spent his early years attending school, playing table tennis, and ballroom dancing before concentrating on music. Since then, Ilya Shmukler has performed as a soloist in Europe and North America with artists such as Mikhail Pletnev, Paavo Järvi, Marin Alsop, Nicholas McGegan, Junichi Hirokami, Anne-Marie McDermott, Anton Nel and David Radzynski, as well as with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the orchestras of the Mariinsky Theatre, in Fort Worth and Sendai, the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, the Bayer Symphony Orchestra and the New Music Orchestra.

Being a finalist and prize winner for "Best Performance of a Mozart Concerto" at the Cliburn Competition is a milestone in his career, as is his New York debut as winner of the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall Debut Audition in the same year, 2022. A graduate of the class of Elena Kuznetsova and Sergey Kuznetsov at the Moscow Conservatory, Ilya continues his studies with Stanislav Ioudenitch at Park University, Missouri, as well as at the Escuela Superior de música Reina Sofía in Madrid.
